Toronto loves a countdown. The City’s New Year’s Eve page says it hosts an annual celebration with a variety of family-friendly entertainment, and closes with a friendly “See you on December 31.” Here is what the City has said so far, what happened on the waterfront last year, and the other ways to mark the night.

Where is the City’s New Year’s Eve celebration in 2026?

The City has not yet posted the location, line-up or fireworks details for this year. As of our check on October 19, 2026, its New Year’s Eve page carries a welcome and the December 31 date but no location, line-up or fireworks details. The City invites readers to sign up for its Celebrate Toronto eNewsletter for updates about City-run festivals and events, including New Year’s Eve. Its Festivals & Events page carries a general line inviting you to ring in the new year with fireworks and live entertainment, without further details. We will update this guide as soon as the City publishes the plan. The City’s own New Year’s Eve page is the place to confirm everything first, and the newsletter sign-up is the quickest way to hear about it.

What did the City’s countdown look like last year?

Last year’s plan, announced in a City release in December 2025, is a handy guide to how the City has approached the night, though this year’s plan may differ. The City invited residents and visitors to a free celebration along the waterfront, with live music, dance, pop-up performances and a midnight fireworks display. The release described a 10-minute fireworks show launched from Toronto’s inner harbour. The designated viewing areas it listed included Toronto Music Garden, Sherbourne Common, Sugar Beach Park, HTO Park, HTO Park West, Harbour Square Park and Harbourfront Centre.

The release said the main stage would be anchored at Harbourfront Centre, with participatory dance sessions at Sherbourne Common through the Dance Together Festival. It added films projected onto the east side of the Canada Malting Silos, viewable from Toronto Music Garden. Harbourfront Centre’s Winterfest was set to add DJ Skate Night, immersive light displays, food offerings in Community Square and live performances. For anyone celebrating at home, the City planned a live broadcast on its CultureTO YouTube channel with performances and a countdown, with ASL interpretation and closed captioning.

How do you get there on New Year’s Eve?

For the morning after, the TTC’s 2026 holiday service page lists Friday, January 1, 2027 as a Sunday-service day. Watch the TTC’s news page for a New Year’s Eve notice. Last year, the City recommended public transit for the celebration and offered free service on the TTC, GO Transit and UP Express from 7 p.m. on December 31. The TTC announced free service until 8 a.m. on January 1, subways running later than usual and Blue Night Network service. If a similar plan returns, it will be announced by the City and the TTC, and we will link to it.

What else is on around New Year’s Eve?

You do not need a countdown crowd to feel the occasion. Nathan Phillips Square has a December 31 entry on the City’s calendar, listed as New Year’s Eve, and the same calendar lists Cavalcade of Lights from December 1 to 31. The City lists Cavalcade of Lights from November 28, 2026 to January 7, 2027, with the lighting elements, select immersive installations and free public skating to music remaining until January 7. Check the Cavalcade page for what is on that night. Our Cavalcade of Lights guide has more.

At the Toronto Zoo, the Glow in the Wild lantern experience runs from September 3 to January 3, primarily Thursday through Sunday, with additional dates during the December holiday period. Check its ticketing calendar for December 31. Our Glow in the Wild guide covers the route. The Distillery Winter Village’s own site says the 2026 village runs from November 12, 2026 to January 3, 2027. Check the village site for what is planned for the night; our Distillery Winter Village guide has the background.

What is there to do on New Year’s Day?

January 1 has its own good ideas, from a skate to a long walk. Our New Year’s Day ideas pick up where the countdown leaves off, and our Christmas in Toronto guide keeps the whole season in one place.
