The City describes the PATH as a mostly underground walkway network that spans more than 30 kilometres of restaurants, shopping, services and entertainment. Union Station and six subway stations are accessible through it. You can walk the PATH from the waterfront to Downtown Yonge, and from the Entertainment District to Yonge Street. It links to the Hockey Hall of Fame, Roy Thomson Hall, the Scotiabank Arena and the Eaton Centre, and City Hall is connected too, so you can walk from the network toward the square. The City lists Nathan Phillips Square and City Hall at 100 Queen Street West. Our pick for a first date in a cold snap: nobody is rushed, and you can talk the whole way. See the full PATH guide.

Winter Date Ideas in Toronto: PATH, Skate, Fire Pit
A cold-night date in three acts, from a warm PATH walk to a skate under the lights to a fire pit, plus gallery and greenhouse backups, all from official pages.

The best winter dates in Toronto have a shape: something warm to start, something to do with your hands, and somewhere glowing to end up.
What is a three-act winter date?
Think of the evening as a sequence. Act one is a warm start, act two is the skate or the lanterns, and act three is a fire pit, a hot drink or a long look at a greenhouse. Below are the stops for each act, with dates only where an official page publishes them. For a broader menu, see our date night ideas, and for the season in full, the winter in Toronto guide.
Act one: where do we warm up first?
A greenhouse makes a winter-warm date. The City describes an indoor botanical garden with five greenhouses, and says the Temperate Show House showcases seasonal flower shows and has a Koi pond. The land was given in 1858 as free public space for plant display. Check the City’s page for current details.
Act two: skate, lanterns or a gallery?
The Cavalcade of Lights runs from November 28, 2026 to January 7, 2027. The City says the free public skating to music remains until January 7, alongside the lighting and select installations. Skate rentals are available at the square during the winter season only. The City’s drop-in skating is free at outdoor artificial ice rinks, which typically open in late November, and its page says they are closed for the season right now.
For a first-timer date, the City’s van visits rinks starting November 20, 2026. It lends skates, helmets and skating aids, free for all ages with no reservation. Skate aids help with balance while learning. A wobbly first skate is a good icebreaker.
The 2026 market runs from November 12, 2026 to January 3, 2027 at 55 Mill Street, with the tree lighting on opening night. The organiser lists dozens of seasonal food vendors and outdoor holiday bars alongside 90+ year-round shops, restaurants and cafes. Festive carollers roam the village. Santa’s Village offers specialty hot chocolates, and the Immersive Nutcracker needs a separate ticket. The Nutcracker is at the Fermenting Cellar and runs daily on the market’s dates.
The district itself has a history worth a slow walk. The district’s own About page describes plans to restore the 47 buildings known as the Gooderham & Worts Distillery, a derelict collection of Victorian industrial buildings that had been pronounced a national historic site, and calls the restored site The Distillery Historic District. Parks Canada says the Gooderham and Worts Distillery was designated a national historic site in 1988.
A lantern trail at the Toronto Zoo runs select evenings from September 3, 2026 through January 3, 2027. More than 2,000 handcrafted illuminated lantern displays line the way after sunset. The Zoo says it takes place primarily outdoors and in the evening, and that food and beverage options include seasonal treats to warm up with.
For a quiet date, free admission to the galleries is offered on Wednesday evenings, and tickets are only available in person at the Guest Services Centre.
The museum says admission is free for everyone on Sundays. A Sunday-afternoon date with the entry sorted.
Harbourfront Centre’s own page says its art exhibitions are free and on view. Walk the lakeshore first, then warm up inside.
Act three: where is the fire pit?
The Winter Garden on November 29 and December 6 invites you to warm up by the fire pits, toast s’mores or sip a hot drink. The Winter Lounge, open every Sunday, has live local performances. A public skate is planned for December 20 in Koerner Gardens, weather permitting, with skate rentals available. Our pick for the final act of the night.
Over two weekends, November 20 to 22 and December 18 to 20, 2026, admission is free. Gather around the bonfire in a cozy blanket and roast marshmallows picked up from the Children’s Centre.
When do these things happen?
- September 3, 2026 to January 3, 2027: Glow in the Wild at the Toronto Zoo, on select evenings.
- November 12, 2026 to January 3, 2027: the Distillery Winter Village.
- November 20, 2026: the Skate Lending Library van begins its rounds.
- November 28, 2026 to January 7, 2027: the Cavalcade of Lights at Nathan Phillips Square.
- Sundays, November 29 to December 20, 2026: the Evergreen Winter Market, with the fire pits on November 29 and December 6.
The City has not published 2026/27 opening dates for its outdoor rinks, so we have left them out. Its map is the place to check once the season starts.
What does a sample evening look like?
Meet downtown and begin on the PATH. Walk to Nathan Phillips Square for a skate during the Cavalcade of Lights. Head east if you want the Distillery Winter Village next. On a Sunday in late November or early December, trade the rink for the Evergreen fire pits instead. Want a hot chocolate between acts? Our winter hot chocolate walk maps the stops, and our rink guide lists the City’s outdoor rinks.
