The best nights of the season start with a scarf, a thermos and a plan to look up. Here are five dated displays for 2026, sorted by how you want to get there.

When do Toronto’s Christmas lights switch on?

The calendar starts early. The Distillery Winter Village opens November 12 with a tree lighting ceremony. Village of Yorkville Park lights up on November 21. Cavalcade of Lights opens on November 28. Glow in the Wild is already running, and a drive-thru show in Ajax opens November 20.

Where can you walk among the lights?

When: November 28, 2026 (Opening Night) to January 7, 2027.

Where: Nathan Phillips Square.

Opening night features main stage performances, a tree and square lighting ceremony, immersive installations, free public skating to music and a figure skating showcase. The lighting, select installations and public skating remain until January 7. Our full guide has more: Cavalcade of Lights dates and a rink-side plan.

When: The official lighting ceremony is Saturday, November 21, 2026, and it is a free event. Destination Ontario lists the lights for November and December.

Where: Village of Yorkville Park, at Cumberland and Bellair streets.

The park lights up on November 21, trees along Bloor Street are lit, and the BIA invites you to enjoy the lights through December 31. Look for the 60 permanent Urban Campfire Benches on Bloor Street West between Church Street and Avenue Road, which light up when in use.

When: November 12, 2026 to January 3, 2027, with opening night on Thursday, November 12.

Where: 55 Mill Street, just east of Parliament Street and south of Front Street East.

The organiser describes cobblestone streets glowing with thousands of holiday lights. Entry is free at some times and ticketed at others, so use the organiser’s calendar before you go. Our guide covers the detail: Distillery Winter Village dates and what to know.

Where can you ride transit to the lights?

When: Select evenings from September 3, 2026 through January 3, 2027. It runs mostly Thursday through Sunday, with extra holiday dates, and not on December 24 or 25.

Where: The Toronto Zoo, on a route of about 1.5 km through the Americas, Australasia and Core Woods areas.

More than 2,000 handcrafted illuminated lantern displays line the trail. A TTC shuttle on Route 200 Toronto Zoo runs between Meadowvale Loop and the Zoo, and connects to Route 85 Sheppard East and Route 86 Scarborough. It needs its own ticket, separate from daytime admission. See our Glow in the Wild guide for more.

Where can you drive through the lights?

When: Select nights from November 20 to December 26, 2026.

Where: 462 Kingston Road East in Ajax, with the entrance from Kingston Road.

The route has over 2 million lights along 2 km, with a drive-thru tunnel and 2D and 3D displays. The drive takes about 30 minutes and is priced per car, so check the organiser’s page for the nights and booking.

How do you choose?

Here is how we would pick, and it is opinion, not a rule. If you want a crowd and a countdown, the Cavalcade opening night is the one. If you would rather stroll a neighbourhood, Yorkville and the Distillery are made for it. If you are bringing a group that does not want to park, the lantern trail at the Zoo is a TTC night out. And if the family would rather stay in the car, the Ajax drive-thru is the cosy option.
