Kensington Market lights up with lanterns every winter solstice, and the 2026 dates are now on the calendar.
The organiser, Red Pepper Spectacle Arts, lists the 37th annual Kensington Market Winter Solstice events as running from December 12 to 21, 2026. The parade is on December 21, 2026.
What do we know about the 2026 parade so far?
As of October 18, 2026, the organiser’s page lists the festival dates and the parade date. It does not yet list a parade start time, a route or 2026 lantern-workshop dates. We will update this page when the organiser publishes them, and we suggest you check the organiser’s page before you head out. Our Christmas in Toronto guide keeps the rest of the season’s verified dates in one place.
What is the Winter Solstice festival about?
The organiser describes the festival this way: each December, on the year’s longest night, it invites thousands to journey together through lantern-lit streets in a celebration of light emerging from darkness. It calls the multi-day celebration rooted in community, artistry and shared ritual.
The roots go back a long way. The festival started in 1988 and was originally named the Kensington Market Festival of Lights. Red Pepper Spectacle Arts, which runs it, was founded in 2002. Its work spans mask making, puppetry and community-wide multidisciplinary festivals, among other media, which helps explain why the procession looks the way it does. Even in 2020, the organiser found a way to mark the occasion, staging a virtual event called Parade-o-Rama to observe the return to light during the darkening days of winter.
Why does Kensington Market host the parade?
The market is a small neighbourhood west of Spadina Avenue in the heart of downtown Toronto. Its narrow streets are lined with small stores with colourful awnings, selling food, spices and clothes from around the world. Canada’s historic sites register says it was designated a national historic site of Canada as a microcosm of the country’s ethnic mosaic.
The area was first developed in 1815 on the Bellevue Estate, west of Spadina Avenue. In the 1960s, Afro-Caribbean, Chinese and East Indian businesspeople moved in and opened shops. All of that history gives a lantern parade plenty of colour to walk through.
Behind the storefronts, back alleyways wind through the neighbourhood past short rows of small late-19th-century cottages on narrow lots. The register notes that the national historic site recognition covers the entire 27-hectare neighbourhood. It is a compact place, which makes it a good one to wander on foot in the days around the festival, with or without a lantern in hand.
How do you plan your December around it?
If you want to turn the night into an evening out, read our guide to Kensington Market food, then see the history of Kensington Market before you go. Pair it with other winter lights from our holiday lights guide. Bring a warm hat, leave time to wander the side streets, wear good boots for the cold pavement, and share the date with someone who loves a good procession. If you are travelling in, plan your route home before the evening begins, so the walk back is as easy as the walk in.
