Some Toronto traditions earn a countdown, and this is one of them. Cavalcade of Lights has brought holiday cheer to Torontonians since 1967.
When is Cavalcade of Lights in 2026?
The 2026 Cavalcade of Lights runs at Nathan Phillips Square from November 28, 2026, which is opening night, to January 7, 2027. Destination Toronto lists the same date range. That is nearly six weeks of lights and skating.
What happens on opening night?
Opening night is the big one. The City lists main stage performances, a tree and square lighting ceremony, immersive installations, free public skating to music and a professional figure skating showcase. The City also describes the night as a celebration with live performances and the lighting of its official Christmas tree.
The City’s sponsorship page cites approximately 20,000 people on opening night. Our pick for a first visit is to take that as a hint: if you love a crowd and a countdown, go on the first night. If you would rather have room to wander, save the lights for a later evening.
What is on after opening night?
The festival offers nightly ice skating and festive light installations for the holiday season. The lighting, select installations and free public skating to music remain until January 7. The same page cites more than 100,000 in total, including the extended program.
Destination Toronto lists the festival as free. If you plan to skate and need rentals, check the City’s page for this year’s details before you go. For reference, the 2025 edition offered free skate rentals on Saturdays during the festival.
How do you plan a rink-side evening?
Here is the plan we would make, and it is opinion, not a rulebook.
- Pick a night, not a time of day. The lights are the point, so aim for after dark.
- Walk the square once before you do anything else, then pick your spot along the rink and watch the skaters loop past while the lights come up.
- Bring one friend who has never seen it, and let them find the tree on their own. If you are coming alone, bring a playlist and a warm layer.
- Finish with something hot nearby. The winter in Toronto guide has more ideas for cold-weather evenings.
Where is Cavalcade of Lights?
Nathan Phillips Square sits at City Hall, 100 Queen Street West. Destination Toronto describes it as right outside City Hall.
Is there skating closer to home?
In 2025 the City also held free, family-friendly New Year’s Skating Parties at neighbourhood rinks, including McCowan District Park, North Toronto Memorial Community Centre and Colonel Samuel Smith Park. Watch the City’s Cavalcade page for any 2026 locations.
What else is on the holiday calendar?
Cavalcade of Lights sits inside a long season. Our Christmas in Toronto guide collects it all, our Toronto Christmas markets list has dated markets, and the Distillery Winter Village makes a good second stop in the same week.
Send this to the friend you would bring to opening night.
