Things to Do in Toronto in January: Festivals, Rinks, Galleries
January 2027 in Toronto: the last glow of the holidays, the Boat Show, DesignTO, Winterlicious and museum shows to see, with dates from the organisers.

January in Toronto has a funny rhythm. The holiday lights are still glowing in the first week, the middle of the month belongs to big indoor crowds, and by the end of it the city is eating its way through a winter food festival.
Here is the month in date order, with every date taken from the organiser’s own page. Dates can shift, so tap through before you head out. For the month before, see our guide to things to do in Toronto in December, and for the whole season start with our winter in Toronto guide.
What is still on in the first week of January?
The holiday season does not switch off on January 1. Three favourites carry on for a few more days.
The 2026 Distillery Winter Village runs from November 12, 2026 to January 3, 2027. Glow in the Wild at the Toronto Zoo runs select evenings from September 3, 2026 through January 3, 2027. The zoo describes an approximately 1.5-kilometre route that guests can explore at their own pace. Our Distillery Winter Village guide has the details for the first.
Downtown, Cavalcade of Lights at Nathan Phillips Square runs from November 28, 2026 (Opening Night) to January 7, 2027. The City says the lighting elements, select immersive installations and free public skating to music remain until January 7. Read more in our Cavalcade of Lights guide.
What can you see in mid-January?
The Toronto International Boat Show runs January 16 to 24, 2027. It takes place at the Enercare Centre, Exhibition Place. It is a good cold-weather escape if you like to dream about summer on the water.
Also early in the month, the TD Gallery at the Toronto Reference Library shows A Legacy in Motion: The National Ballet of Canada at 75 from September 26, 2026 to January 10, 2027. Toronto Public Library says it curates multiple free exhibitions each year in the gallery.
What is on in late January?
DesignTO says the 17th annual DesignTO Festival returns January 22 to 31, 2027. The organization describes itself as a charitable arts organization that believes design can create a sustainable, just, and joyful world. It reports that its festival attracted over 250K visitors in 2026. The festival forms Toronto’s design week, so check its schedule for what is on near you.
Then comes the big appetite event. Winterlicious 2027 takes place from January 29 to February 11. The City describes a three-course prix fixe menu at more than 200 Toronto restaurants. Our pick is to book early and choose a neighbourhood you do not usually visit.
Which museum and gallery shows run through January?
If the weather turns, these exhibitions give you a reason to go indoors.
- The ROM’s Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2026 exhibition runs from November 7, 2026 to February 28, 2027.
- Raptors: Fierce & Feathered Dinosaurs opens at the ROM on December 19, 2026 and runs to September 6, 2027. The ROM says it brings dinosaurs to life through casts, real fossils, hands-on activities and a large-scale immersive experience.
- The Aga Khan Museum lists the exhibition Saks Afridi: SpaceMosque from October 24, 2026 to March 7, 2027.
- At the Gardiner Museum, After the Island: Caribbean Canadian Ceramics runs from October 9, 2026 to April 25, 2027. It brings together four Canadian artists with roots in the Caribbean who use clay to explore what our bodies inherit, protect, and carry forward.

How should you plan the month?
A simple January plan: finish the holiday lights early, give the boat show a Saturday, save the end of the month for DesignTO and Winterlicious, and slot a museum visit into any day the forecast turns grim.
