The City lists an Early Years with Caregiver skate for five years and under and their caregivers. Drop-in programs at outdoor artificial ice rinks are free. The rinks typically open in late November, and the City’s page says they are closed for the season right now. From November 20, 2026, the City’s Skate Lending Library van lends skates and helmets at rinks, with skate aids to help with balance, all free with no reservation. Warm-up stop: change rooms are available at most locations. Our rink picks are in the free outdoor skating rinks guide.

Winter Activities for Kids in Toronto, With Warm-Up Stops
Skating, a historic farm, lanterns, a toboggan hill or two, each paired with a warm-up stop and sorted by age so little ones and bigger kids both get a turn.

Kids do not need a perfect plan in winter, just a good thing to do outside and a warm place to land afterwards.
How does this list work?
Each stop below comes with a warm-up stop, and the stops are sorted by age. Where a date or rule comes from an official page, it is linked. For the bigger picture, see our winter in Toronto guide, and for more nothing-to-pay ideas, our free winter activities list.
What can five and under do in winter?
A historic working farm with 7.5 scenic acres of woods, ponds and gardens. The City’s February 2026 Family Day release said admission is free. Warm-up stop: the Simpson House has a resting and warming area with public washrooms.
The ROM describes WonderWorks as a reimagined play-based learning space for young children. The museum lists stroller friendly access among its comforts. The Earth Rangers Studio on Level 2 is open most weekends. Warm-up stop: the museum itself, which is indoors from the first step.
The square’s own site says its large pond doubles as a skating rink in the winter. Warm-up stop: North York Central Library sits on the north side of the square beside the civic centre, and its features include a KidsStop Early Literacy Centre. A rink, then a story. Our pick for toddlers.
What suits ages six to 12?
The City inspects the hills on its list regularly through the winter, and hills may close if conditions are unsafe. The list includes Kidstown, Riverdale Park East and West, Withrow Park and Corktown Common. The City recommends a helmet and says all children should be supervised by an adult. Warm-up stop: the City says more than 50 washrooms are available in winter and links to a finder for open ones.
The City’s February 2026 Family Day release describes the Zoo as open year-round, with five indoor tropical pavilions, daily Meet-the-Guardians talks and 3,000 animals. Wild Encounters, which let visitors meet animals up close, run year-round. Warm-up stop: those indoor tropical pavilions.
The Zoo’s lantern trail runs select evenings from September 3, 2026 through January 3, 2027, according to its September 2026 release. Its FAQ says it operates primarily Thursday through Sunday, so check the Zoo’s site for the evening you want. More than 2,000 handcrafted illuminated lantern displays light the way. It takes place primarily outdoors and in the evening, and the Zoo suggests dressing children for the weather. Strollers are welcome. Warm-up stop: food and beverage options include seasonal treats to warm up with.
The 2026 market runs from November 12, 2026 to January 3, 2027. Kids aged 9 and under are always free to enter and do not need a ticket. Santa’s Village has a letter-writing station and, for the warm-up stop, specialty hot chocolates and sweet holiday treats.
Sundays from November 29 to December 20 at Evergreen Brick Works. The Winter Garden on November 29 and December 6 has fire pits, s’mores and hot drinks, and the Winter Lounge has live local performances. The Art Hive is a free community art studio. That is a whole warm-up stop with an activity built in.
Two weekends, November 20 to 22 and December 18 to 20, 2026, with free admission. Kids can drop in on free winter crafting and roast marshmallows at the bonfire.
General admission is free at the City’s history museums. For Family Day 2026 the City invited families and visitors of all ages to its museums for hands-on activities. Warm-up stop: any of them, since they are indoors. Check the City’s calendar for this winter’s programs.
What about teens and tweens?
The City lists a Youth skate for ages 13 to 24. Its Play Mobile touring sports program is free and visits parks, and the winter sports list includes skating, ringette and snowshoeing. Children under six need a caregiver aged 14 or older. Warm-up stop: the nearest rink’s change room.
The City calls High Park, with its network of trails, a great spot for beginners and families. Warm-up stop: the City’s list of open winter washrooms is the same one used for toboggan days. Then let the group vote on the hot drink.
The Cavalcade of Lights runs from November 28, 2026 to January 7, 2027. Free public skating to music remains until the last day. Warm-up stop: City Hall is connected to the PATH, which the City describes as a mostly underground walkway network. See the Cavalcade of Lights guide.
What does a day for most ages look like?
Start with the morning outdoors, such as a toboggan hill or a rink once the ice is in. Move to a warm-up stop by lunchtime, such as the Farm’s warming area or a museum. Save the evening for a lantern trail or a market, and the Zoo, the Distillery Winter Village and Evergreen each list something warm to eat or drink. Bring a second pair of mittens.
What if the weather turns?
Some of these plans work whatever the forecast. The ROM’s WonderWorks, the City’s history museums and the Zoo’s indoor tropical pavilions are all indoors. North York Central Library has its KidsStop Early Literacy Centre. For more indoor ideas, see our rainy day guide. Our pick for a surprise win: the pavilions, a tropical break in the middle of a Toronto winter.
