Date Night Ideas in Toronto: By Effort, Area and Rain Plan

Date night in Toronto, sorted by how much effort you want to put in: ferry rides, museum evenings and a big night out, each with a rain plan.

The best date nights in Toronto do not need a reservation, a dress code or a plan B you invent in the rain. They need a good place, good timing and someone to share the walk. Here are nine, sorted by effort, built on public places, galleries and the lake, with a rain plan beside each one.

Easy dates: show up and wander

Ferries to Toronto Island run year-round from Jack Layton Ferry Terminal. From mid-April to mid-October, service runs on three routes to Centre Island, Hanlan’s Point and Ward’s Island. The City’s winter schedule starts on October 14 and runs to mid-April.

Our pick is to ride out and simply walk, then ride back as the city lights come on. Buying tickets in advance saves time, since online ticket holders use an express line during peak travel times. Schedules can change because of weather or mechanical issues, so check the City’s page on the day.

Rain plan: swap to the Harbourfront Centre exhibitions below.

Skating is a date that lets you hold hands for a reason. The City says outdoor artificial ice rinks typically open in late November and close for the season in March. It operates more than 50 outdoor rink locations in a typical season. At City indoor rinks and outdoor artificial ice rinks, all drop-in programs are free.

One rule to know before you lace up: everyone on the ice must wear skates. The City’s page points you to a map for finding a rink near you.

Rain plan: the City’s indoor rinks (arenas) offer free drop-in programs too, so check the same page for an indoor session.

Go on a Saturday morning, graze and call it brunch. The City says the North Market is primarily known for its Saturday Farmers’ Market. The North building hosted its first Saturday Farmers’ Market on April 5, 2025. The South Market, the main building, is open six days a week and has more than 60 specialty vendors known for the variety and freshness of their fruit, vegetables, meat, fish, grains, baked goods and dairy products.

The Market Complex has served as a City landmark for more than 200 years, so you are walking into a bit of the city’s habit as well as its pantry.

Rain plan: it is built for it, so the date barely changes.

Harbourfront Centre’s main building is at 235 Queens Quay West. The centre says its art exhibitions are free and on view. On its home page, it also lists the Shaw Festival staging theatre at Harbourfront Centre.

Our pick is to pair a gallery wander with a lakeside walk, then see what the calendar offers that night.

Rain plan: this is the rain plan. Start with the exhibitions and let the weather decide the rest.

A little planning: museum evenings

The museum says that on the second Friday of every month until the end of 2026 it stays open late, with free programming and access to all current exhibitions. The nearest subway station is St. George. Admission is also free for everyone on Sundays, which makes a daytime version of this date easy.

Rain plan: none needed. It is indoors, and the subway is close by.

The AGO says admission is free on the first Wednesday night of each month, and you book free general admission tickets online in advance. The closest subway stop is St. Patrick, on the Yonge-University line. You can also look for the volunteer Gallery Guides, who are there to explore current exhibitions and artworks with you.

Our pick is to choose one room and talk about it for ten minutes, instead of racing through the whole gallery.

Rain plan: it is an indoor date, so you are already covered.

The Gardiner welcomes and inspires visitors through the rich history and storytelling power of clay. It is at 111 Queen’s Park. Its home page lists an exhibition spanning sculpture, painting, scent and immersive installation by four Caribbean Canadian artists.

It is small enough to finish in an evening, which is exactly why we like it for a date.

Rain plan: indoors, so no change.

Founded in 2014, the museum is dedicated to fostering intercultural dialogue and understanding. Its permanent collection has over 1,200 masterpieces, alongside performing arts and educational programming. On the TTC, take Line 5 and exit at Aga Khan Park & Museum Station.

Check the museum’s home page for current exhibitions and performances before you choose a night.

Rain plan: indoors, with a station stop named after the museum itself.

A big night out

ROM After Dark is a 19+ themed after-hours event series that lets you explore the museum in a whole new way. Each themed event adds live DJ sets, interactive workshops and unexpected moments around every corner. Past themes have ranged from dinosaur celebrations and Halloween bashes to fashion festivals.

This is the date for people who say they do not like museums. Pick an event that suits your mood on the ROM’s page, since dates and themes change.

Rain plan: the whole night happens indoors.

How to pick

Start with how much energy you have. If it is low, take the ferry or the market. If you want conversation, take a gallery. If you want to dance, go to the ROM. For wet-weather backups, our rainy day guide goes deeper, and our winter date ideas cover skates and warm-up stops. If you are planning the whole weekend, start with things to do in Toronto this weekend or the main things to do in Toronto guide.
