Winter in Toronto gets a bright, loud and very welcome send-off in early February: Lunar New Year is lighting up City Hall.
The 3rd Toronto Lunar New Year Fireworks Celebration is set for February 5 to 7, 2027, at Nathan Phillips Square. The organiser calls it an outdoor Lunar New Year celebration at Toronto City Hall. The organiser’s 2027 page says its event details were reviewed on October 2, 2026, so check the site before you go in case anything has changed.
What is on the schedule?
The organiser says heated pavilions will host robot dancers and Peking Opera. The weekend’s big moment is 9:00 PM on February 6, when musical fireworks are planned. Lucky draws and red envelopes are part of the fun too.
The organiser’s schedule marks Saturday, February 6 as an outdoor, free day, with a market still to be confirmed. That day’s lineup includes Dragon & Lion Dance on Ice shows, variety shows on the main stage and a countdown ahead of the fireworks. Sunday, February 7 is also marked outdoor and free, with a Couture on Ice Fashion Show and a Cultural Showcase on the lineup. The organiser also lists VIP heated tent experiences on Saturday and Sunday, so check its site for what is included.
Expect company. According to figures provided by the organiser, previous editions attracted roughly 60,000 to 80,000 attendees, and it forecasts a similar scale in 2027. Dress for a February night outdoors, and give yourself time to wander the pavilions before the fireworks.
How should you plan your visit?
Build the evening around the fireworks, then work backwards. Arrive early enough to see a show or two on the main stage, warm up in a heated pavilion, and claim a spot with a clear view of the sky. Because the schedule can change, check the organiser’s site the week before you go, and decide in advance whether a VIP tent suits your group. Bring a friend who loves a good countdown.
Has this celebration been here before?
Yes. This is billed as the 3rd edition. The organiser’s Eventbrite listing for SPARK the Lunar New Year! shows Saturday, February 14 and Sunday, February 15 at 100 Queen St W and is marked as ended. Our Nathan Phillips Square guide explains the square if you want to scout the rink and plaza before the crowds arrive.
What is happening in Chinatown?
Chinatown has its own tradition, run by the Chinatown BIA. Its 2026 celebrations were announced for Saturday, February 21 and Sunday, February 22, 2026. The listed venues were Chinatown Centre at 222 Spadina Ave and Dragon City Mall at 280 Spadina Ave.
When we checked on October 20, 2026, the BIA’s events page filed the 2026 celebrations under past events and listed no 2027 Lunar New Year item. We will add the dates here as soon as it publishes them.
Until then, a Chinatown wander is a good warm-up for the season. Start with the history of Toronto’s Chinatown, then plan a meal with our Chinatown restaurant guide or the best dim sum in Toronto. For more ways to make the most of the cold months, browse the Winter in Toronto guide, and send this page to whoever you would bring to the fireworks.
