Toronto's museums reward curiosity of every size, from a national historic site with a fort to a museum devoted to shoes. This guide gathers our museum coverage in one place: small museums worth a detour, the City's history sites, the Aga Khan Museum, art galleries old and new, Black history sites and Indigenous culture.

The City of Toronto runs 10 history museums and says general admission at all of them is free, among them Fort York National Historic Site and Mackenzie House, a restored 1858 townhouse. The Aga Khan Museum was founded in 2014, and its permanent collection includes manuscripts, paintings, ceramics and textiles. The Bata Shoe Museum is home to a collection of shoes and footwear-related objects, and The Art Museum at the University of Toronto says its admission is always free.

Exhibitions rotate and admission offers vary, so we link to each museum for the current picture. Pick one, wander and see what catches your eye.
